The use of the term "personal information" in this privacy notice means any information from which your identity is apparent or can be reasonably ascertained.

The Australian Antarctic Division collects personal information that you choose to give us, for example your email address.

We do not collect identifiable personal information about you if you only browse this web site.

We only use your personal information for the purposes for which you gave it to us.

We do not share information about you with other government agencies, other organisations, or other persons without your permission unless it:

  • is necessary to provide you with a service that you have requested
  • is required or authorised by law

We analyse non-identifiable web site traffic data to improve our services. On occasion, we may use cookies.

Your choices

You may gain access to personal information about you that we hold. You can have us correct any errors or delete the information we have about you.

To protect your privacy and the privacy of others, we may have to gain evidence of your identity before we can give you access to information about you or change it.

Data Collection

Data that in some way identifies the user is gathered during interactions with the Centenary website in the following circumstances:

  1. Computer Information

It is a necessary part of visiting any website, including the Centenary site, that the user's web browser provides the machine's identity (its IP address) to the web server, so that the server can send the reply to the correct machine. In addition, the browser type and operating system are provided, and if you clicked on a link at another site (eg a search engine) to get to our page, then the address of this referring site may be recorded.
  2. Navigation, Click-Stream Data and Cookies

Browsing any website, including the Centenary site, generates a record of pages visited and the time at which each page was visited. The Centenary web site does not store cookies on your computer, but does use 'session cookies', that are deleted when you close your web browser.

  3. Searches

Search terms that you enter into our search box are collected, but there is no link between the search terms and personal details. We look at the total numbers of searches for different topics to help understand what people are looking for on the site, so we can make improvements.

Accountability

The staff who operate the Centenary web site are subject to the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988.
