Douglas Mawson - Life of an Explorer by Lincoln Hall

This year celebrates the 100th anniversary of Mawson’s ill-fated Australian Antarctic Expedition and this magnificent photographic tribute by one of Australia’s best known and highly respected mountaineers, Lincoln Hall OAM, is a fascinating biography of Australia’s greatest Antarctic explorer.

Featuring more than 170 photographs, many of them previously unpublished as well as old diaries and correspondence, Lincoln Hall reveals the many sides of this great scientist and explorer and draws on his own experiences in an attempt to understand what made it possible for Mawson to achieve what he did.

This is a fascinating life story of a reserved man who never sought fame or glory. Nevertheless his bravery and determination in mapping large tracts of Antarctica ensured he returned from this expedition a hero.

Published by New Holland, the book is available from bookstores from June 2011.

Mr Hall talks about his book from an adventurer's perspective in an interview to local ABC radio.
